Manuscripts should be submitted by e-mail to editor @ indianjgastro . com

The Indian Journal of Gastroenterology is the official publication of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology. This peer-reviewed Journal is published bimonthly (January, March, May, July, September, November), as a medium for articles related to the digestive tract and diseases. It is indexed by the National Informatics Center, New Delhi, and indexed and abstracted by Excerpta Medica, the Netherlands, and Index Medicus and Medline, USA.

Manuscripts submitted should not have been published earlier (in part or in whole) or be under simultaneous consideration for publication by any other journal. A statement to this effect (Authors’ Declaration) signed by the authors must be faxed to the Journal simultaneously (email not acceptable). Violation may lead to a published retraction of the printed article by the Journal, the Journal writing about the issue in its pages, the Journal informing the authors’ institutions or other bodies and other actions as deemed necessary by the editor. Accepted manuscripts become the permanent property of the Journal and may not be reproduced, in whole or in part, without the written permission of the editor. Submissions received without the signed Authors’ Declaration will not be processed.

Studies involving human subjects or animals should have received the approval of the institutional ethics committee. A statement to this effect must be included in the manuscript text. The Journal has the right to ask for a copy of the ethics clearance letter. If the institution does not have a formal ethics committee, a statement signed by the authors that the terms of the Helsinki Agreement have been adhered to will be necessary.

Each manuscript received by the Journal is assigned a manuscript number. Please provide this number in all communications. If you do not receive an acknowledgement within a week, please email or fax us. All efforts are made to provide an editorial decision to authors as soon as possible, usually within 6 weeks of submission.

Manuscripts instructions
Manuscripts should be submitted in electronic version, as Microsoft Word document or in Rich Text Format (.rtf), to editor @ indianjgastro . com . All files should be formatted using American English spellings and 12-point Times New Roman font.

Arrange the manuscript as follows: Title page, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, References, Tables, Legends. Figures should be submitted as separate files.

Editorials and Review Articles will generally be by invitation. Contributors who wish to submit uninvited reviews may discuss details by email with the editor prior to submission. Authors should be working in and have published papers in the area being reviewed and have sufficient expertise to critically evaluate the relevant literature.

Text of Original Articles should be less than 3000 words; the article should not ordinarily contain more than 5 tables and figures taken together. Short Reports are shorter papers reporting original research work in maximum 1500 words with 1-2 tables and/or figures and 12 or fewer references. The Journal will not publish case snippets from January 2008 onwards, though occasional Case Reports that deal with well-studied clinical problems that contribute to understanding of pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of a condition and may provide material for further research may be considered. Their text length may not exceed 750 words, with no more than 1 Table and 1 Figure. Case series is a new column in which prospective or retrospective data from a series of patients with a particular disease providing a new or interesting perspective, or data highlighting interesting differences in the disease from a particular geographical area may be reported. These submissions may contain up to 1500 words, and a maximum of 3 tables/figures and 10 references. Letters discussing material published recently in the Journal, short studies (up to 750 words with a maximum of 1 Table or Figure and 10 references), observations and opinions may also be submitted. Images of special interest may be submitted with an accompanying 250-word text and up to 2 references.

Clinico-pathologic conferences: These articles (up to 5000 words) are edited transcripts of the discussion of a patient (whose clinical details are provided) by a clinical discussant, followed by the findings at a definitive test (biopsy, autopsy, confirmatory serological test, etc.) discussed by a pathologist. Appropriate radiological, histological and other images should be included.
Obituaries: This should refer to a doctor working in India or of Indian origin, related to digestive sciences, who has left her/his mark on society or on the profession and whose contributions need to be highlighted. A brief sketch (up to 500 words) of the person’s personal and professional life along with a photograph may be submitted.

Title page
In animal studies, the title should state the species; all other titles will refer to human studies. State names of authors (including first names), the departments and the institution where the work was done. The Journal reserves the right to ask for and publish the contribution of each author to an article. Any potential conflict of interest, financial or otherwise, should be declared. A short running title, not exceeding 40 characters, should be provided. Mention the name, postal address, facsimile number and email address of the corresponding author. Acknowledgements, if any, may be mentioned on this page.

Case submissions should also include a brief descriptive Abstract. Short Reports, Review Articles and Case Series will include a short non-structured abstract.

References
Identify references in the text by superscript numbers. Number references in the order in which they first appear in the text. Publications as Abstract and Letter should be so identified in parenthesis. The responsibility for accuracy of references lies with the authors. The Journal is in agreement with the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Therefore, the general arrangement, abbreviations of journal names and punctuations followed are as per the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts submitted to Biomedical Journals (See www.icmje.org , www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html ).

Tables
Each Table should be typed double-spaced and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. Necessary explanatory notes, if any, may be given below the Table.

In clinical photographs, patient’s identity should be suitably masked; in case this is not possible, a copy of the patient’s written permission should accompany the manuscript. Figure number (numbered consecutively in arabic numerals), title and explanations should appear only in the legend.
